David Vernon and Dick Lee - Music from Around the World

David Vernon and Dick Lee - Music from Around the World

It's an hour that passes very quickly, helped by a liberal supply of anecdotes and reminiscences from a duo who might be on a stage but whose relaxed manner could just as easily place them on neighbouring bar stools.

Rob Adams, The Herald

"Combined blistering pace with beautifully crafted melodies …they articulately introduced each genre, telling stories behind each tune…the interactions between the two were light-hearted and humorous"

Dick Lee:

Dick’s professional musical career began 50 years ago, after graduating with a B. Mus. from Glasgow University. It has encompassed classical, rock, jazz, traditional, and much that does not fit easily into any particular category. As performer on saxophones, clarinets and recorders Dick has played and recorded with many artists and groups including David Vernon, John Renbourn, Hebrides Ensemble, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Michael Marra Band, Chita Rivera and Ken Mathieson's Classic Jazz Orchestra.

His own groups include Dick Lee’s Chamber Jazz, winners of the BBC National Big Band Competition, Dr. Lee's Prescription and Bechet Nouveau.

Dick Lee reviews:

"Reeds wizard Dick Lee combined virtuosity with wit, feeling and not a little soul . . . there can't be many sounds quite like that of Lee's bass clarinet in full gallumphing flight." Jim Gilchrist, The Scotsman.

"Dick Lee dazzled on a variety of woodwind instruments, from the rich, dark tones of the bass clarinet to the unusual, distinctly oriental sounding Hopf treble recorder . . . an unusual, enjoyable concert." Neil Jones, The Herald.

David Vernon:

Edinburgh-based accordionist David Vernon has been a full-time professional musician for over 30 years, and performed the world over at scottish-themed musical events and festivals, including 10 tours of New Zealand.

David is renowned for his extraordinary technical ability and variety on the box, and also as an entertainer, which often includes feats of memory.

He has appeared on numerous radio and TV spots, including several live broadcasts on BB

David Vernon reviews, from selected accordion and fiddle clubs (see below for reviews of the duo):

David Vernon took us on a tour of the world with music from every corner along with a few traditional selections, played impeccably. He has an extraordinary talent – one comment from a member of the audience was that he must have been born with an accordion on. He interspersed his playing with stories and jokes, and left us in awe of his talent.

The icing on the cake has to be the performance of our guest artiste David Vernon. His varied programme of Continental, Jewish, American and Russian music had us all captivated. His ability to play using either hand alternately jigs and reels is amazing. By the way, his jokes had us in stitches as well. Well done David.
