Biography
Scottish violinist, Emma Baird, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music (BMus) and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (MMus). Her violin teachers have included Andrea Gajic, So-Ock Kim, Ying Xue (Doric String Quartet) and Nicolette Moonen (Baroque violin).
A passionate chamber musician, Emma is a member of the Lark Piano Trio. She enjoys regularly performing chamber music throughout the UK, and has played at the Edinburgh International Festival, Southwark Cathedral, Petworth Festival, Marylebone Music Festival, Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival, Moen Sommerkoncert, Victoria and Albert Museum London, Cambridge University, Perth Concert Hall and more. Emma was twice selected to participate in the Cavatina Chamber Music Competition at Wigmore Hall in 2022 and 2024, winning first prize in 2024 alongside the Lark Piano Trio (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). She also enjoys regular duo collaborations with accordionist Ryan Corbett, and they have most recently performed recitals at Leeds International Concert Season, Bath Festival and Lammermuir Festival.
As a soloist Emma has received masterclasses from Nicola Benedetti, Niklas Walentin, Natasha Boyarsky, Tasmin Little, Renaud Capucon and Josef Spacek. She has also received guidance in chamber music from John Myerscough, Jo Cole, David Watkin, Joseph Swensen, Alasdair Beatson, Richard Ireland, Alison Wells and Joanna MacGregor.
Born in Ayrshire, Emma started to play the violin at the age of four, and subsequently attended the RCS Junior Conservatoire and St Mary’s music school under the tutelage of Andrea Gajic. During this time, she appeared as concerto soloist with the RCS Juniors Symphony Orchestra, became a three-time winner of the Nan Christie Prize for Strings and won the ECF (Edinburgh Competition Festival) Concerto Competition.
Emma currently performs solo and chamber recitals throughout the UK, as well as freelancing with Scottish Ballet and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She plays on an 1830 Postacchini violin.
