Repertoire

We are constantly commissioning new works. Examples of repertoire from previous projects include:

'Le Regard' - a double screening of female-directed surrealist films accompanied live by new experimental scores. Music by Niall Docherty and Nancy Johnstone for flutes, oboe/cor, saxophones, guitar, 2 x keyboards, electronics.

Biography

Hoolan Ensemble is a fast-emerging collective of musicians and composers dedicated to commissioning and performing innovative contemporary music, and to collaborating with other art forms. Passionate about bringing contemporary music to wider audiences and to performing in non-traditional concert venues, they will soon follow their debut professional engagement at the Burrell Collection Museum in Glasgow with a major collaborative film project, which they will tour to heritage cinemas and art centres across Scotland and the North of England in Autumn 2024. The project, entitled 'Le Regard', will be a a double screening of female-directed surrealist films accompanied live by new experimental scores: backed by Sam Heughan as the winner of his 'Write Start' initiative, it aims to spotlight the forgotten female pioneers of early cinema whilst using this history to create fresh, unusual works of contemporary music and film. A flexible ensemble, with performances with one to 6+ players.
