Biography

UK based, Brazilian double bass player, Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira, graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a First Class Honours and Masters with Distinction in 2023, studying with renowned bassist, Jiří Hudec. A member of the Latin Grammy's Recording Academy, Marcus has been awarded several prestigious prizes including the ABRSM Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award and the RNCM Concerto Competition, for which he is the first Latin-American double bass prize-winner in the competition’s history.

Marcus' passion is to bring Brazilian music to a wider audience as well as to change the perception of the double bass in western classical music, bringing it to the fore in concerto and chamber music contexts.

In 2023, Marcus became the first Brazilian double bassist to perform a concerto with the BBC Philharmonic, making his professional debut as a soloist in the UK performing the British premiere of Andrés Martin’s Double Bass Concerto No. 1. Marcus frequently works with orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2023/2024 has been a Manchester Camerata 360 Fellow, working across the organisation both performing and within a community context.
